Entry in the
June 1964 Parish Magazine
Ascension day, May 7th 1964 was a day to remember
in the history of St. Wilfrid's. That day at Festal Evensong the Bishop of
Chichester dedicated Mr. Uli Nimptsch's bronze of the Christ Ascendant above the
high altar in the presence of a large congregation.
The worship splendidly led by our two choirs was
most inspiring and the Bishop's sermon was just right for the occasion. We owe a
great debt of gratitude to the good friend of St. Wilfrid's whose magnificent
gift meant so much to her, and in years to come will mean so much to St.
Wilfrid's in terms of devotional worship, leading, through a sense of the
Presence of the Eternal Christ, to more steadfast witness and service. Like the
precious box of ointment in the Gospels, the value of such a gift cannot be
estimated in £ s. d. unless, indeed, these letters be taken to stand for Love,
Service and Devotion.
The collection at this service for the Bishop's
Million Pound Appeal for Sussex Churches and the Cathedral amounted to over £37.
