Junior Church

Children are specially welcome at St. Wilfrid’s and in Junior Church we accept children from the age of 3 to 11  (note it is required that children under the age of 5 are accompanied by a parent).

Junior Church is split into two groups – those under 7 and 7 upwards.

We have reading, discussions and craft and are working on song and singing because not everybody likes it!

In the spring and summer we will have our classes outside under the cherry tree as the whole area is secure.

Special events in our yearly calendar include: Harvest Festival, All Saint, Remembrance Sunday, Saint Wilfrid’s day, Christmas,  Epiphany (with cake), Lent (pancakes!), Good Friday, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost.

The children meet every Sunday at 10:30am in the Church Hall (except the third Sunday in the month which is a Family Eucharist see below) and later join the rest of congregation for the final part of the Sunday Eucharist. On the third Sunday of the month there is a special Family Eucharist at which all children including the children and staff from Nyewood Infant and Junior School are present and contribute to leading our service.

If you would like your children to join us or have further queries please contact Estelle Meagher at

Junior Church craftwork - building a sandcastle on Sunday 25th May, 2008 . The subject of the day was 'The man who built his house upon the rock'.

Toddler Corner

This area at the back of the church is for pre school children and has toys and books for them to sit and enjoy during the Services.

Paper activities for older children to use during Services are on the table at the back of the church to collect as they come into church before sitting with their parents.

Care of Children

If you are a parent, or looking after a young child, you may feel anxious about bringing them to a service. Be assured, children are especially welcome as part of our worshipping community.

They often seem to feel comfortable and at home in the building, and enjoy the colourful activity of worship, and its quieter moments.

If you feel the need to take a restless child out of the service, there is a comfortable room set aside for this where our junior church meets.

Child protection

Everyone who works with children here at St Wilfrid’s has been checked by the Criminal Records Bureau. We follow strict diocesan guidelines and have specialist advisers available.   Further information can be obtained from our Junior Church Leader or Child Protection Officer.

Junior Church and
Family Eucharist Podcasts

These recordings include parts of our Family Eucharist Service (3rd Sunday in the month) which involve children from Nyewood Schools and our Junior Church and also recorded interviews with the children at regular Sunday Eucharist services when the children finish Junior Church and join the remainder of the Eucharist service.

Each Sunday from Sunday 27th July to 31st August Wendy Morris arranged a HOLIDAY CLUB so parents could  still bring their children to church on a Sunday morning at 10:30am through the summer knowing that they were safely looked after during the Eucharist.

The theme was FUNdamentals of Faith with the accent very much on making the exploration a FUN thing to do.

During the six summer weeks the childrenlooked at:

  1. Who am I?

  2. Who is God?

  3. What is Prayer?

  4. What is the bible?

The Holiday club was open to children aged 5 - 11 yr and parents who don't yet come to church but would like to see what their children are doing are very welcome.
