Derek Debuse Ensemble

4th August, 2010

This recital attracted another healthy audience of over 50 people to listen to Derek Debuse, Chairman of the Bognor Regis Music Club, who played piano and Alex Palmer from Selsey who played flute present a very entertaining programme of mostly flute music. The composers chosen ranged from Vivaldi and Handel to Piazolla and John Rutter. To give Alex a breather in the middle of the programme Derek played three ‘Hidden Melodies’ written by Joseph Cooper for the ‘Face the Music’ TV programme of a few years ago now! The audience managed to spot the melodies even though they were cleverly disguised.

After the performance Derek commented on the effectiveness of the church building for recital performances. “It is large enough, is well lit and can be well-heated in the cold months for performers to enjoy playing here”. The audience were treated to a wonderful display of skill and dexterity as well as sensitivity in the playing of the pieces. The sound of the flute soared throughout the church in such a way as blot out all your worldly worries. Such good therapy!

The duo were enthusiastically applauded. The clapping lasted so long that the Derek and Alex were ‘forced’ to play an encore, which was the Badinerie from Bach’s suite. Everyone left feeling refreshed and pleased that they had come along and listened to such beautiful music.

Two more Lunchtime Recitals will be performed on September 1st by Stephen Norris (piano) and on October 6th by Rebecca Grove (Soprano), Stephanie Peat (Mezzo Soprano) with Rex Latter (piano).  LW
